ABSTRACT
The article discusses management leadership in American corporations and four types of business leaders. Risktakers are effective during a company's embryonic stage because their traits include being intuitive and adaptive. Caretakers are right for companies in the rapid growth stage. They are cautious, analytical, and experienced. Surgeons are good leaders in maturing companies. Their characteristics include the ability to sell at a profit and reject the status quo. Undertakers who are decisive, unselfish, and objective are needed in declining companies. Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, three factors influencing leadership in specific situations, six core competencies of true leaders, and the John F. Kennedy book "Profiles In Courage" are mentioned.
