ABSTRACT
The article is from the president of the Financial Executives International organization, Phil Livingston, who comments on the need for reform in financial reporting in the United States. Proposals for best practice standards include recommendations from the New York Stock Exchange's Corporate Accountability and Listing Standards Committee which focused on corporate governance, the authority of independent directors, and shareholder activity. Suggestions from the Business Roundtable include the requirements that stockholders approve stock option plans for top management, only independent directors can be committee members who supervise audit, compensation, or corporate governance, and whistleblowers are protected from retribution.
