ABSTRACT
The article discusses the role of chief financial officers (CFOs) in the U.S. federal government. Few federal agencies had a CFO prior to passage of the CFO Act of 1990. A CFO's focus will vary according to the agency/department he or she works for, and commentary is provided from Roger Scearce, formerly of the Department of Defense, and William T. Earle, CFO of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms on demands of their specific departments. Both men agree that technology can be used to achieve greater efficiencies. INSETS: William T. Earle.;Checks and Balances.
