The Directive on Privacy and Electronic Communications has just come into force and the Commission has followed it with published research on the effect of information technology on personal privacy. Commissioned by the Euro Parliament, the research, Security and Privacy for the Citizen in the Post-September 11 Digital Age examines emerging technologies like identity management on-line, location-based services and virtual residence where smart devices connect to people's home, office and car. A European Commission proposal to speed up the flow of information between member countries' tax authorities to tackle fraud will allow them to coordinate investigations against cross-border tax fraud and to carry out more procedures on behalf of each other. The Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee has had a draft resolution adopted by the European Union Parliament on the taxation of energy products.
