ABSTRACT
Bombings that claimed the lives of over 50 people in Istanbul, Turkey caused domestic bewilderment when it became clear the perpetrators were Turkish muslims. Two bombs hit two of the city's main synagogues, the Neve Shalom in the district of Galata and the Beth Israel in Sisli. Going off within five minutes of each other, they caused carnage in the busy streets on which the houses of worship were located, killing 25 people and wounding more than 300. Most were passersby, security guards, or the residents of neighbouring flats.
