ABSTRACT
The "status quaestionis" on conversion which is presented here is an aid to thinking about the significance of the transformation and the renewal of life. After setting things in the biblical context - experience and language - the article presents a broad historical survey: the first centuries and the catechumenate, ancient monasticism, the preaching of the Franciscans, the Reformation and the Council of Trent, and the colonial mission. Particular attention is devoted to the twentieth century where conversion is at the centre of a contest between religion and the human sciences and of a debate on the right of freedom of religion. A glance at the teachings of Vatican II reopens the question of conversion also for believers and for Christian communities.
