ABSTRACT
This article reports on the prize-winners of the National Youth Transport Competition for 2000 of the Institute of Logistics and Transport. The winners Kemi Olashore, Joanne Coxon, Claire Brown and Edward Orsi boarded the Eurostar on what proved to be an inspiring visit to Lille in Northern France. They were shown the VAN, the integrated transport system designed and run by an association of the municipalities in an around Lille. The Van system is run 20 hours out of 24 every day by 60 staff by a central control room. It is a fully integrated system comprising driverless trains, trams, buses and taxis. Returning to Great Britain, the group stopped off at Ashford where they were hosted by institute member Paul Kneller of the Eurotunnel. The group then took the train to London, England en route to Southampton where they were met by Jenny Lanning of the Associated British Ports. Next came a visit to the ROMANSE, the Road Management System for Europe, that helps manage Southampton's transport information and so achieve a free traffic flow. Activities undertaken by the group for the next two days were also discussed in this article.
