ABSTRACT
This article reports on the ideas presented by John Lennox, head of the Vehicle Inspection Development department of the Freight Transport Association, during a seminar titled Maintenance Benchmarking for Lift Trucks which was held in September 2000. He believes that independent auditing of lift truck fleets is a crucial development for the warehousing and logistics sector and he is sure that they will become the norm in industry. Independent auditing means that companies are able to achieve value for money from their lift truck maintenance providers, set benchmarks against industry-wide safety standards, help prioritize effective remedial action to address any shortcomings, and compare performance between individual depots.
