ABSTRACT
This article reports that the Chartered Institute of Transport's (CIT) International Council meeting, held in Birmingham, England on October 2000, reached important decisions that will affect the future for all the members of the Institute of Logistics and Transport (ILT). A proposal from the ILT, on behalf of all its members in Great Britain, to revise the criteria for chartered membership, was accepted. The revision reinforces the rigor of the knowledge requirements, thus ensuring that chartered membership will continue to confer a real mark of distinction on those who attain it. This change comes into effect immediately and revised guidelines is currently being prepared for those seeking election, or upgrade, to chartered membership. Of perhaps greater long-term significance, the council also decided to recommend to the CIT membership that CIT should expand its activities to embrace logistics as well as transport.
