Great Britain's skills minister Ivan Lewis is keen to defend his department's record against criticism. He agrees that employers have a crucial role to play in plugging Great Britain's skills gaps. One of the basic presumptions is that training should meet need, ending the supply-side approach and giving employers a much greater input into the training and qualifications of their staff. It means making it easier for employers, local colleges and others to fit course content and delivery to firms' requirements. At the same time, the expansion of sector skills councils will mean a better analysis of skills requirements in each employment sector and closer working to build the provision to match it. In addition, different ways to support learning in the workplace are being tested, particularly focusing on small and medium size enterprises.
