ABSTRACT
This article presents some critical remarks on competency based education. This article is intended as an editorial waning to academic sociologists who teach. The article is related to the author's research in the area of elementary teacher education and the bureaucratization of social behavior. The author in this article questions the statement that "competence in teaching sociology is an attainable body of knowledge and skills." The statement rings strongly with the rhetoric of the movement within educational circles known as competency based education (CBE). CBE is a movement to replace traditional measures of educational attainment with specific behavioral competencies. With increased funding from such agencies as the U.S. Office of Education and the Fund for the Improvement of post-secondary education, CBE is expanding beyond halls of education departments and is beginning to make its presence known in other disciplines. Sociological investigations into CBE as a social movement could help to break down some of these myths, the author therefore encourages such research as a timely and productive line of investigation.
