This article is an attempt to resolve the "definitional disputes" of corporate violence by offering the following definition: corporate violence is corporate behavior which produces an unreasonable risk of physical harm to employees, the general public, and consumers, which is the result of deliberate decision-making by persons who occupy positions as corporate managers or executives, which is organizationally based, and which is intended to benefit the corporation itself. This definition has a number of virtues. First, it directs attention to the fact that it is the corporation itself as a social and legal entity which is criminal. Second, it points out that even though a corporation can only act through the individuals who occupy positions within the corporation. Third, the definition explicitly recognizes the physical harm caused by these corporate acts and helps to make the victims of this violence visible to society. The need now, of course, is to take this definition and use it as a basis for doing theory and research etiology and control of corporate violence.
