ABSTRACT
This article highlights the Training and Development Forum, sponsored by the Institute of Logistics and Transport, which was held in Birmingham, England on June 2000. Opening the event, Robert O'Neill highlighted some of the key issues currently surrounding logistics and transport training. He started by reiterating the argument that training should be regarded by organizations as an investment and not a cost. Turning to the fear of company managements that they could invest in training employees and then see them take off for other organizations and more money, he said that problem could only be solved by a change in culture throughout industry. Dorothea de Carvalho focused on the need for logistics and transport industry personnel to seek Continuing Professional Development and lifelong learning. A positive example of the sort of progress which can be made by individual companies when it comes to training, though, was provided by David Page.
