ABSTRACT
This article highlights that annual logistics debate for 2000, which was sponsored by the Institute of Logistics and Transport, that focused on the role of the Internet in business logistics. The panel speakers were Mark Knowles, John Wiltshire, Jan Szymakiewicz, Manolis Priniotakis, and David Kirkwood. From the questions and points of view coming from the floor, it was clear that the logistics sector and its partners are faced with huge challenges that question the way things are done today. The most hotly debated of these related to efficient loads. Concerns were raised by hauliers that the new Internet exchanges would further erode already hard-pressed margins. Other delegates were concerned about what customers will, and will not, accept in the new electronic economy.
