ABSTRACT
This article focuses on the achievements of Richard McLeish, chairman of the Lancashire and Cumbria branch of the Institute of Logistics and Transport, who died in 2000 at the age of 49. He was first encouraged to join the institute in December 1972 while undertaking a one-year traffic department management training course with the Western National Omnibus Co. In 1985, he joined the Hertfordshire County Council and gained a diploma in transport under the direction of Martin Higginson, before becoming public transport officer for the City of York. In January 1996 Richard became a transport consultant. His contribution to the institute and its constituent institutes, and not least to the transport teaching profession, has been invaluable, and many are the students who are in his debt.
