ABSTRACT
This article highlights a conference held on April 2002 in London, England, which was sponsored by the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland, and focused on the issues affecting the bus industry in Great Britain. This one-day event was attended by almost 200 industry professionals and was the first in a series of events supported by the Institute of Logistics and Transport. Under the direction of the institute's policies committee a bus working group has been formed to respond on behalf of the institute to the House of Commons Transport Select Committee inquiry on the bus industry and to produce a strategic paper dealing with challenges facing the bus industry. The key issues to be tackled include the approach to subsidies and their impact, the benefits of the bus quality partnership approach, bus priority measures and their enforcement, the regulation of the bus industry, and how the bus services can be effective in reducing social exclusion.
