ABSTRACT
This article reports that the Strategic Rail Working Party of the Institute of Logistics and Transportation has decided to offer a long-term vision of how the railway in of the future in Great Britain should look. The structure of the report sets out the good and bad points of the present situation, and how this has evolved. The focus then concentrates on European Union issues, which are an essential background to future developments. A key consideration is the potential which the railway has in the 21st century, but that development will also have to be financed. This may require some further reorganization of the railway industry. The report ends with a discussion of the skills and competence issues, after all, it is the staff which make any organization work.
