This article presents air transport-related ideas that were presented by Ian Hamer, chairman of the Air Transport Users' Council (AUC), during the Institute of Logistics and Transport's 2002 Sefton Brancker Lecture which was held in Cardiff, Wales. The first issue which potentially constrains capacity for provider and consumer is the argument surrounding environmental issues. He went on to consider the current regulatory environment governing the aviation industry of Great Britain. He told his audience that the liberalization of the aviation market in Europe is something from which passengers have been reaping the benefits since 1997. he went on to consider what could be done in this situation. He predicted an uncertain future for European airlines. He said that recent comments by European Union transport commissioner Loyola De Pacio could be seen as hinting that public subsidies will be cut off for airlines in the union, leading them merging or just withering away. He says that there is still plenty of work to do by the AUC in promoting the interests of air passengers.
