ABSTRACT
This article describes real-life experiences related to the practice of logistics/operational research in the area of the Vehicle Routing Problem. The authors of this article start by reporting an application related to the routeing of helicopters used in the exploration and production of crude oil in Brazil. The difficulties that were experienced in the implementation of the algorithm were not apparent from the beginning. Detailed reports documented every phase of the design and test of the algorithm. The client started raising doubts about the ability of the algorithm to help the flight programmers in their daily task. It became a low priority item in the computerized system of which it should be an important part. Tests proved that the algorithm was, in fact, a very efficient procedure for routing the helicopters, but it was never implemented for operational purposes. Issues which arose during the implementation of delivery by vans were also discussed.
