ABSTRACT
This article reports that a service designed to combat the 200,000 crimes committed yearly against truck drivers across Europe has been launched. The EUROWATCH service enables drivers to access police in foreign countries whenever a crime occurs. It is estimated that losses to industry through freight crime have grown to more than ten billion euros a year in Europe. A major problem faced by the drivers when abroad is the difficulty they have in obtaining police assistance if they become victims of a crime. The service works through a single telephone number that a subscriber can call from any country, allowing information to be communicated in any European language. A feature of the service is its capability to forward vehicle tracking information direct to police in real-time, enabling them to respond with greater speed and precision. The countries that have EUROWATCH coverage were enumerated.
