This article reports on the visit made by members of the Ireland branch of the Institute of Logistics and Transport to the manufacturing facilities of the Oral-B Laboratories in Newbridge in Kildare, Ireland. The members were shown how the company implements the principles and processes of total quality management and world class manufacturing in its manufacturing and logistics areas. Following an initial introduction to the subject there was a tour of the various facilities. From its evolution through five distinct stages of development to the present one to teamwork, the company has achieved a number of improvements in various operational areas. These improvements include a reduction in inventory from six months at the start of the 1990s to two weeks into May 2000, reduction in the number of logistics suppliers to five for approximately 80 percent of transport requirements, elimination of the inspection of inward goods with most materials being supplied on a Just-in-Time basis and a stock-turn of 25 a year.
