ABSTRACT
It is the contention of this article that the economic growth in Ireland and the growing potential for economic growth in Northern Ireland, coupled with the technology explosion in the use of electronic commerce as the internationally accepted method of conducting business, have created a challenging environment for all businesses operating in Ireland. The issues and challenges facing businesses located in Ireland but operating the global marketplace will be common across the key industry sectors in Ireland in terms of increasingly complex customer service demands, agility in manufacturing necessary to meet customer service and greater product variety, distribution infrastructure, cost containment and sustained profitability. The Institute of Logistics and Transport has a critical role to play in the development of strategic supply chain management in Ireland.
