ABSTRACT
This article reports that a number of members of the freight transport special interest groups of the Institute of Logistics and Transport participated in a seminar on goods vehicle maintenance standards and enforcement procedures presented by the staff from the Vehicle Inspectorate (VI). Margaret Gent and John Carmichael, outlined the wide variety of work undertaken by the VI and particularly emphasized their new public image whereby their objective is to help and guide operators to achieve legal compliance. They focused on the role of the VI in emission testing of vehicles and the issue of Reduced Pollution Certificates, pointing out that with the right choice of vehicle-engine combination, hauliers could gain significant annual vehicle excise duty savings.
