This article focuses on how the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) has been developing, as of May 2000, a program of technical assistance and research in support of organizations implementing travel plans. The initiative is designed to reduce the adverse environmental impacts of transport to and from a specific site or building. In connection with the initiative the DETR-funded Energy Efficient Best Practice Program commissioned a study into the potential for energy savings that might be possible through travel plans that reduce over-dependence on the car for both commuting and business travel. A booklet titled "Preparing Your Organizations for Transport in the Future: The Benefits of Green Transport Plans," was published by the DETR in June 1999 and was distributed widely to all local authorities and major employers in England. The DETR also commissioned an independent evaluation of the plans produced for the March 1999 target and a best practice guide for government departments was published in January 2000.
