ABSTRACT
This article reports on the 2001 Kinnock Lecture which was delivered by John Harvey, chairman of the Tibbett and Britten Group. He voiced his concerns over the serious skills shortage facing the business logistics industry of Great Britain. He thinks that the government should recognize the dependence society as a whole has on a fully functioning supply chain. He believes that the situation might be exacerbated by the Working Time Directive of the European Commission. There are also other challenges to operators which must be taken into account. These are those relating to access, congestion and the environment, and those relating to human resources issues.
