ABSTRACT
This article highlights the seminar on performance measures in rail transport, which was held in London, England and organized by the Royal Statistical Society Business and Industrial Section in conjunction with the Institute of Quality Assurance and the Institute of Logistics and Transport. John Disney welcomed delegates and outlined some personal views on rail transport, from three perspectives of customer, supplier and government. This set the scene for subsequent speakers whose strong links with the rail transport industry enabled them to describe, more in detail, the task of raising the quality of rail transport in Great Britain to the levels achieved in certain other countries. Chris Kinchin-Smith presented the vision of the Strategic Rail Authority that within ten years, the country would have a rail system of which it can be proud, and he described the search for better performance metrics that would drive the ways of working that would help to achieve this vision. Other speakers during the seminar were Richard Middleton, Mark Wardman, Peter White, Chris Nash and Cesar Rivera.
