This article presents figures contained in the 27th edition of the government's compendium of transport statistics for Great Britain for 2000. The average British resident now travels over 6,800 miles a year, an increase of six percent since 1990. Average petrol consumption for cars was about ten liters per 100 kilometers. Energy consumption by transport was 55 million tons of oil equivalent in 2000, which represented 34 percent of all energy use in the country. The number of vehicles taxed for use on roads had reached 28.9 million by the end of 2000. Road freight accounts for 80 percent of goods lifted and 66 percent of goods moved. Car traffic levels were little changed between 1999 and 2000. Passenger kilometers on national railways increased by two percent from 38.5 billion in 1999/2000 to 39.2 billion in 2000/2001. Overall, air transport activity continued to increase in 2000.
