ABSTRACT
This article reports that the London City Airport has announced that the high-speed Bombardier Q400 turboprop aircraft has been approved by the Joint Airworthiness Authorities of Europe for steep approach operations. This means that 20 different aircraft types for scheduled services can now operate at the city airport. The new Q400 is noticeably different from the existing types. It has an extremely fast cruise speed of 360 knots, powered by a pair of 5,000 shaft horsepower engines with quiet slow-turning six blade propellers. Gary Hodgetts, head of operations standards for the city airport, believes that this is excellent news for their customer airlines. The Q400 offers 70-plus seat capacity, jet-like speed, the range to serve more destinations, superior passenger comfort and the lowest operating costs per seat of any aircraft currently operating in the city.
