ABSTRACT
This article discusses why the Freight Transport Association (FTA) has criticized the European Union (EU) white paper on common transport policy. The FTA believes that while the strategic proposals set out in the paper are laudable, the measures suggested do not recognize reality and, as such, are not viable. The FTA believes that the white paper underrates business and economic issues in pursuit of predominantly social and environmental issues. The FTA has identified six main priorities which should be the targets for EU actions. These are focus on infrastructure capacity, customer and performance-based improvements, completion of the single market, harmonizing road freight taxation across the EU, and the efficiency of the transport market.
