ABSTRACT
This article presents findings of the Jones Lang LaSalle European Warehousing Index, which tracked the performance of prime warehousing property in 22 distribution-warehousing markets in Western Europe, covering the period 1980 to the end of December 2001 and the three Central European markets, covering the period 1994 to the end of December 2001. The overall performance of the European warehousing sector weakened last year, from the strong performance of 2000. Take-up levels in 2001 were lower than in 2000, but compare favorably with levels of the 1990s. Construction activity increased last year, in response to strong occupier demand in 2000. In 2001, the rental index recorded its lowest annualized growth rate since 1996. Although there has been much interest from investors in the warehousing sector, investment activity declined last year as investors became more cautious, as the European economy slowed.
