ABSTRACT
This article focuses on the achievements of Tom Beagley, president of the Chartered Institute of Transport (CIT) in 1977-1978, who died on January 5, 2001 in field of business logistics and transport. He joined the Ministry of Transport of Great Britain in 1946. He was head of the ports division of the ministry of transport and under-secretary of state in the Department of Economic Affairs. In 1968 he was under-secretary of the Urban Transport and Buses and in 1972 became deputy secretary, transport industries in the new Department of the Environment. One of the architects of the restructuring of the CIT, which led to the creation of the International Council as it now stands, Tom became chairman of the International Advisory Committee which looked after the interests of members not affiliated to an independent section or council. He was appointed an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Road Transport Engineers in 1979.
