Canon has an inkjet flatbed in its range of All-in-One products-the SmartBase MPC190. This high-performance machine offers fast, photo quality printing, copying and up to 9600 dpi scanning--photo quality output--all in what Canon claims to be its most compact multifunctional design to date. Print resolution is 2400 x 1200 dpi, ensuring sharp prints and a broad colour range, even on plain paper, and speed is a healthy 14 ppm for monochrome and 10 ppm for colour. As a digital colour copier, the device rivals stand-alone copiers--resolution of 600 x 600 dpi monochrome and 1200 x 1200 colour, speed of 14 ppm in monochrome, and 10 ppm in colour. There are also 25-400% zoom, two-on-one copying and Image Repeat. The scanner works at 600 x 1200 dpi optical, and up to 9600 dpi enhanced and colour reproduction is ensured by 36-bit colour depth accompanied by 256 shades of grey scale for clear monochrome scans. Usefully, one can quickly separate images where several were scanned in a single pass and then treat each one individually. The compactness claim seems justified--it covers only 40 x 55 cms of desk wood work. Interfaces include all the usual Windows from 98 onwards.
