ABSTRACT
The Design Build Foundation (DBF) and Marshalls PLC in Great Britain established in the year 2000 a cross-industry task force to investigate the barriers to achieving a lean external works supply chain. The challenge of lean construction emerged from the publication of a report in 1998 by John Egan on needed changes in the British construction industry. Egan, in assembling his Rethinking Construction task force in 1997, sought assistance from Daniel T. Jones, co-author of the book "Lean Thinking". The book "Lean Thinking" discussed the application of the core principles of the Toyota Production System to any organization. The DBF project established construction project management recommendations.
