Plan Azur forges ahead

December 2003
Middle East;Dec2003, Issue 340, p40
Morocco is already one of the biggest tourist destinations in the Middle East and North Africa, drawing 2.25m visitors a year. Its varied attractions and good weather ensure that tourist spending makes a sizeable contribution to the local economy. However, King Mohammed VI and his government hope to catapult the country into the premier league of Mediterranean tourist destinations and is optimistic that infrastructural investment will eventually enable Morocco to compete with the best established destinations, such as Spain and Greece. As a result, the government has drawn up its Plan Azur as the centerpiece of the 2010 Vision tourist strategy, providing for the construction of six purpose-built tourist resorts along the coast.
