ABSTRACT
The multi-ethnic city of Kirkuk in northern Iraq is a microcosm of Iraq today, with ethnic tensions in the city raising the spectre of civil war. With its mix of Arab, Assyrian, Kurdish and Turkomen communities, Kirkuk is something of a test case for co-existence and stability in the new Iraq. Judging by the increasing tensions and clashes in Kirkuk — particularly between the Kurds and Turkomen— Iraq may be facing some difficult times ahead. The two main Kurdish political parties, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the Kurdistan Democratic Party are both calling for the new Iraq to be a federal state, in which the Kurds can run their own affairs in their own region in the north.
