ABSTRACT
All the international indicators and surveys suggest that India will be a major consumer market in the near future. However there are also many challenges that logistics professionals may face in realizing profitable business in India. In the area of personnel, the Indian government will have to improve restrictive labor laws radically in order for improvements to be realized. The area of road transportation is very fragmented. In early 1999, the government announced the end of road transport subsidies, and private companies are ready to take on the challenge of becoming major road transport companies. However, there have been improvements in the telecommunications infrastructure in India. The industry has started to open up to private competitors. One factor that outweighs any negative issues is the drive and enthusiasm of the Indian people.
