ABSTRACT
The essence of 'smart merchandising' is summarized into 12 points. 'Smart merchandising' is about increasing sales and profit margins whilst decreasing inventories, mark-downs, merchandise and operating costs. Velocity is at the heart of 'smart merchandising.' Smart merchants can link best-selling lines with best-spending customers to be able to measure not only what but also who generates sales and profits. Smart buyers consider not only their customers' different lifestyles and differing store requirements but also the evolution in fulfillment channels in which the store is now only one element competing with home shopping.
