ABSTRACT
Traffic growth on Great Britain's roads is slowing, according to provisional figures released by the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions. In seasonally adjusted terms, the figures also show that the amount of traffic on the roads has changed little since the fourth quarter of 1998. The rate of traffic growth over the years leading up to the late 1990's has dropped dramatically compared to the 1970's and the 1980's, despite the growth in the nation's economy. Traffic growth during the peak of the economic cycle averaged 2%, which is much less than growth during the previous peak years 1973, 1984 and 1989.
