ABSTRACT
Truck lanes are inevitable on the M1, M6, M25 and M20. These would provide one or two lanes restricted to HGV. Cars and other vehicles would be banned from these truck lanes, which would be designed to give HGVs free flows. Extra truck lanes would be provided on uphill section to allow trucks to maintain their speed. Cars and other vehicles would be restricted to just one or two lanes. Alongside the limited number of lanes for cars, could come variable speed limits down to 40 or 30 miles per hour, since they have already been shown to increase capacity on congested motorways and reduce accidents.
