ABSTRACT
There is a need for fundamental changes to the way in which transportation managers and planners are selected and developed. The forces driving these changes include privatization, deregulation and the emergence of new technology. Congestion and concerns for the environment and safety are also major issues. Managers and planners are required to acquire new skills and, in many cases, change their attitudes. If transport systems are to be sustainable in economic terms, there is a need to recognize the importance of customer satisfaction. In conclusion, the author emphasizes the importance of implementing human resource policies and practices geared towards the selection, training and retention of capable managers and planners.
