ABSTRACT
The Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions in Great Britain has published the findings of a survey on speeding on both urban and non-urban roads. Data was collected from 92 sites as part of the National Traffic Census. The average speed estimates were intended to represent speeds chosen by the drivers at the sites which are not unduly constrained by either road layout or exceptional traffic congestion. Cars were found to be most likely to be speeding over 70 miles per hour on motorways and over the 30 miles per hour speed limit on urban roads. Motorcycles were the vehicles most likely to exceed the 40 miles per hour speed limit on urban roads.
