ABSTRACT
The publication of 'Practical Guidelines for Year 2000 Contingency Planning,' produced by Lloyd's Register and based on work by the UK P&I Club warns shipping companies to develop contingency plans for continuing operations in the event of the millennium bug equipment and computer system breakdown. It is recommended that companies have date-processing electronic systems to ensure continued operations. Strategies must be developed to cope with computer system and equipment failures which might be detected early on using compliance tests implemented in shipping companies. To reduce the risk at the rollover date, ship-owners should also consider such options as arranging for vessels to stay out in open water, remain in port and avoid busy or restricted channels. Other details about the publication may accessed through the company website.
