ABSTRACT
This article focuses on the film "The Green Butchers," a devious Danish black comedy about a pair of meat vendors who owe their booming business to what could be called a human touch. Sophomore director Anders Thomas Jensen, who won an Oscar for his 1998 short film "Election Night" and wrote the recent Dogme film "Open Hearts," combines the unmistakably macabre and oddly sympathetic characters to amusing effect. Picked up by Newmarket Films at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, the picture should appeal to those with an appetite along the lines of Jean-Pierre Jeunet's 1999 French cutup "Delicatessen."
