ABSTRACT
Universal access to information, knowledge and freedom of opinion is of critical importance for democratic and free societies. As a facilitator of this access to information and knowledge, media industry is somehow different from other industries. As an indispensible part of modern and democratic societies, the financial health and stability of media companies is even more important than the companies in many other industries. However, with the uprise of internet based media and entertainment companies particularly in the past ten years, the future of print media and the sustainability of print media companies have been extremely challenged. As the discussions about the financial sustainability of print media companies are still going on, the developments in the print media sector of advanced countries support these discussions. Newspaper circulations and readership continues to diminish consistently each year for the last ten years in G7 countries. The financial statements of media companies with print media origin suffer from this situation and the negativity has deepened since 2008 global economic crisis. As a developping country and close follower of developped countries, Turkey is not at exactly at the same point but being negatively effected by similar trends. The purpose of this study is to pinpoint print media companies which have been able to overcome this negativity. By observing and analysing the actions they have taken, we hope to clarify which type of print media companies will sustain their power and profitability in the future.
