ABSTRACT
The article reports on the opening of South Korea's Lotte department store. The 750,000-sq.-ft., 12-level, full-line department store and entertainment center in Daegu (one of Korea's leading metropolitan areas) cost nearly $160 per sq. ft. to design the retail interior. "When Lotte builds a space, they build it over a train station, and create a city within a city," says Andrew McQuilkin, vice president of design at FRCH Design Worldwide, Cincinnati. Its impressive store opening is even more remarkable when one takes the national tragedy of Daegu station into account.
