According to the David Hide Asthma and Allergy Research Centre in England, 3.3% of children worldwide are allergic to peanuts--that's three times the number reported in 1989. The research team suspects that the rise in allergies is due to more women eating peanut products while pregnant or breastfeeding. Children may become sensitized to the allergenic peanut proteins before birth or through breast milk--a theory that is being more closely studied. The good news is that researchers have discovered an antibody that can substantially decrease patient sensitivity to peanuts. The new treatment, which requires monthly injections, can raise tolerance to nearly nine peanuts.
