Members of the Scottish Region Policy Committee of the Institute of Logistics and Transport have met with the Scotland's Minister of Transport to discuss issues relating to the policies and strategies of the Scottish Executive. The meeting was timely; earlier in the day the Minister launched a consultation on a Strategic Transport Authority for Scotland. The Group expressed support in principle for this development but the Policy Committee will be scrutinising the detail and responding accordingly. At the earlier launch of the consultative document, some reservations were expressed that the new body could take away the opportunity for local authorities to address issues at a local level. In the discussions, members qualified in various disciplines advanced views considered earlier by the Committee. These included strategies relating to travel, green travel plans, congestion and the introduction of new technologies for making bus and rail travels easier. Concerns over skills shortages across the industry, especially the introduction of the Road Transport Directive in 2005, were also discussed. The Scottish Executive provided financial support for a new Young LGV Driver Scheme. The issue of providing some focus on logistics and transport schools was also covered.
