ABSTRACT
Graeme Souness was a legendary player who won five league titles and three European Cups with Liverpool. As part of an occasional series, he talks to ANDREW MAGEE about his hardman reputation, Chris Rea songs and his favourite statue I never encouraged my 'tough guy' reputation. A small part of me resents that it's the first thing people mention. I haven't won what I've won by just being an aggressive footballer. You were allowed to be a lot more physical and every team had several tough guys. But I would like to think I had more to my game than that. If I could relive one match it would be the European Cup final in 1984 against Roma. We went into the lions' den, playing in their stadium — the Stadio Olimpico — and we weren't expected to win. But we never had any doubts. In the tunnel we lined up and started singing the Chris Rea song I Don't Know What It Is But I Love It. That's when you could see the fear in their faces. For the Italians this was going to be a life-changing moment. They were terrified. We were going out to play just another game.
