ABSTRACT
This article introduces an Australian-designed syringe that promises an end to needlestick injuries among hospital staff as of September 13, 2003. Precise figures aren't kept, but the 2001 Australian Senate inquiry into nursing estimated that in 1998, 13,000 nurses suffered needlestick injury. Ged Cowley, assistant federal secretary of the Australian Nurses Federation, says the number is possibly much higher. Safety syringes goes on sale early 2004, and should sit somewhere between standard disposable syringes, at 18¢ per unit, and existing safety syringes, at 75¢, in price.
