ABSTRACT
This research note provides a global interpretation of the 1950s. First, it applies to Quebec society the concept of democratic authoritarianism, which characterizes autocratic regimes whose legitimacy also rests on popular elections. Second, revisiting the last ten years of the pontificate of Pius XII, it aims to highlight how this decade fostered a much more conservative climate throughout the Catholic world. Overall, we hope to show how the myth of the so-called Great Darkness is based on two realities that are both independent and complementary. It is these realities that have anchored, in the collective psyche, the idea of an essentially reactionary era.
